The Jason Porter Memorial Fund has been established at the Washington State University Carson College of Business in memory of Porter, a scholarly associate professor of accounting who died unexpectedly on August 23, 2023.
Porter’s goal was to help students of all stripes appreciate accounting. “When I teach non-accounting majors…I want them to begin to understand how important accounting is for the day-to-day operations of a business,” he wrote on LinkedIn. And when teaching accounting majors, he wanted them to “take one step closer to loving accounting as much as I do.”

Porter was also known for his catchphrase, “I have a spreadsheet for that!”
Porter mentored many students in his role as advisor for the WSU Pullman chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, the honors organization for financial information students and professionals. He received numerous awards during his career, including WSU’s Global Campus Excellence in Online Teaching Award and the Institute of Management Accountants’ Distinguished Scholar Award. After his death, he was posthumously promoted to career track professor.
Porter earned his doctorate at the University of Georgia. Before joining the WSU faculty in 2018, he taught at the University of Idaho and the University of South Dakota.
