Avid readers of the New York Times Book Review will undoubtedly recognize the illustration style on the Washington State Magazine Winter 2010/11 issue cover is that of Joe Ciardiello. “Civility in Politics” depicts three prominent WSU alumni at the Washington state capital: State Representative Sam Hunt ’67 (left), Secretary of State Sam Reed ’63, ’68 (middle), and State Senator Linda Evans Parlette ’68 (right).

Representative Hunt represents the 22nd District which includes Olympia and surrounding areas. He is chair of the State Government and Tribal Affairs Committee, serves on the Education Committee and the Ways and Means Committee, and was floor leader for the House Democratic Caucus. He received his degree and teaching certificate from Washington State University, and took post-graduate studies at WSU.

Secretary Reed is Washington’s fourteenth Secretary of State. He advocated for, and oversaw the introduction of, Washington’s nonpartisan blanket primary voting system for statewide and state legislative district elections. He was elected to the office of Secretary of State in 2000 after serving as Thurston County auditor. Reed received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social studies and political science, respectively, from WSU.

Senator Parlette represents Washington’s 12th Legislative District which includes Chelan, Douglas, and parts of Grant and Okanogan counties. She sits on the Health and Long-Term Care, Financial Institutions, Housing and Insurance, Ways and Means, and Rules committees, and is caucus leader for the Senate Republicans. She received her bachelor’s degree in pharmacy (with honors) from WSU.


About the artist

Joe Ciardiello was born on Staten Island, New York. He is a graduate of the High School of Art & Design and earned his BFA from Parsons The New School School for Design. Over his 35-plus-year career he has worked for many major magazines and newspapers as well as for corporate and advertising clients, book publishers, and record companies.

Besides his portraits of authors which appear regularly in the New York Times Book Review, other publishing clients include: The Atlantic Monthly, New York Magazine, the New Yorker, Playboy, Rolling Stone, Sports Illustrated, TIME, and The New York Times. He has been awarded several medals from the Society of Illustrators in NYC.

Joe also plays the drums regularly with a blues trio and an all-illustrator jazz group. He lives in western New Jersey.
