Here are our collected pandemic hobby stories…

Becky Kramer

Washington State Magazine science writer

Kramer became interested in native plant identification near Pullman. “My new hobby was an outgrowth of hiking Kamiak Butte every week when we were isolated at home,” she notes.

Kramer is still hiking and identifying native plants. “Kamiak Butte contains remnants of the native Palouse prairie, so it’s an amazing landscape for plants,” she says. “I like to hike it in every season. You get to see the progression of wildflowers in spring and summer, seedheads and berries in fall, and the land at rest in winter.”

Lindsey Holcomb

Office manager in the department of community and behavioral health at the WSU Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine

Holcomb started bread baking, along with oil painting and violin lessons. She is still enjoying two of her three pandemic hobbies. Holcomb dropped bread baking but she is still painting and taking violin lessons. In fact, she reports, “I’m getting pretty decent at it!”
